Q&A: Do you know any pop surrealism artists from places other than USA?

Pop Surrealism

Question by Lil ol’ me: Do you know any pop surrealism artists from places other than USA?
I’m doing an Art project and under the requirements we need to list 4 artists that influenced us from different cultures. I really enjoy pop surrealists, my favorite is Mark Ryden. Can anyone help me out?

Answer by James in NZ
There are a load of them you’d like from other cultures. The first names that springs to mind, given what Mark Ryden’s work is like, are Sarah Dolby and Joanna Braithwaite, who both work here in New Zealand. Argentina’s Ramiro Arango is another possibility (though his work is far wider ranging than just pop surrealism/magic realism), as is the Russian duo Komar and Melamid. Perhaps you should look at some earlier artists, though – some of the surrealist masters of the mid-20th century are definitely worth considering, such as Max Ernst, Paul Delvaux, Oscar Dominguez, Boleslas Biegas, Remedios Varo…or even earlier, with the 19th century works of John Millais, Arnold Bocklin, Odilon Redon, and Fernand Khnopff. There are plenty to choose from. Googling any of these names should turn up a load of images.

Cosplay from Vancouver to Tokyo

STORY: Dressing up like your favorite cartoon character is not just on Halloween in Japan. Designing and wearing clothes based on manga and anime characters is an everyday hobby for some, and the fun is spreading worldwide. [Krystle, Cosplayer from Vancouver]: Its getting more and more popular now. I go to school for fashion and nowadays a lot of times we were told to look at a lot of Japanese magazines, cosplay magazines, a lot of girls in my class are like, Oh that girl is so cute, shes a gothic lolita. Its really starting to come over more and more. Sarah, Candice, and Krystle from Vancouver are wearing costumes inspired by world famous anime director Hayao Miyazaki. [Candice, Cosplayer from Vancouver]: This color is THE color from the anime. I love the colors that Miyazaki uses which are different from a lot of other anime, he uses really warm colors. I searched everywhere, and I found it. I was like, Two dollars a meter! YES! Just like any other hobby, cosplay enthusiasts are crazy about what they do. [Sarah, Cosplayer from Vancouver]: A lot of costumes here are really impressive, and you can see a lot of people put a lot of effort and time, and they are back home as well, but I think its rare to find people that will put the amount of time and money into it. Dennis Potter’s ‘Pennies From Heaven’ – ‘Roll Along Covered Wagon’

‘Pennies From Heaven’ by Dennis Potter. Episode 6: ‘Says My Heart’. The strangest setting for a hill-billy tune – The High Courts of Justice and all who swell in them. The whole panoply of the law from Judge (Carleton Hobbs) to Prosecuting Counsel (Peter Bowles) gather as Arthur (Bob Hoskins), on trial for murder, makes a confident entrance as his silver screen cowboy hero. The opening graphics mark the beginning of a long court sequence shot with five cameras continuously as Potter’s sour take on the lottery of law is given the full on treatment – a bandwagon, a show, a rodeodo and the fickle hand of the law. Comic and typically dark touches add to the surreal setting of this fanciful number in a glorious pastiche of visual gags and film comedy. A jury member giving noose gestures with his tie, prosecutor Bowles grabbing a whisky shot along the saloon bar, stubbing a cigarette out on a lowly colleague, prison wardens bending their knees in time with the music and a jury showing a leg and hamming it up with all the cowboy style they can muster. Music: ‘Roll Along Covered Wagon’. Harry Roy and His Orchestra from the Mayfair Hotel, London (Vocal: Bill Currie). Recorded 1935. Dennis Potter’s award-winning ‘Pennies From Heaven’ (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.

Dreams from the desert
The advent of contemporary Aboriginal art, flowering in a small desert community 250km west of Alice Springs and spreading out across the sands, rock holes and gibber plains into galleries around the globe over the past 40 years, is often referred to as the renaissance of the world’s oldest living art tradition.

Pinback “From Nothing to Nowhere”

DIRECTOR JOSHUA NICHOLS CREATES COSMIC LIGHTSHOW FOR LATEST PINBACK MUSIC VIDEO Barren Desert is the Perfect Canvas for Director’s Music Video Debut. LOS ANGELES — First-time music video director Joshua Nichols brings his sci-fi savvy to the desert for “From Nothing to Nowhere,” the brand-new video for indie rock band Pinback. “From Nothing to Nowhere” is the first single off of their new album, “Autumn of the Seraphs.” Nichols set out to create a visually astonishing performance piece. Knowing that location would be everything, he took the band to one of the most magical and remote places he could find: a dry lake bed in El Mirage, California. The video features Pinback performing in the desert at night, bathed in massive floodlights. The dead calm takes on an otherworldly quality; the landscape appears almost moon-like. As the song builds, the dark skies illuminate and a mysterious Aurora Borealis forms above. The cosmic phenomenon mirrors the song’s uplifting and mystical sound. As the song plays, the Northern Lights evolve and become more complex in form. When the song reaches its climax, the video features a wondrous, visual effects sequence in the nighttime sky. The end result is a powerful and moving counterpoint to the lyrics, shot with a sharp artistic flair. Although Nichols had never shot a music video, the band discovered him through his previous commercial work at the SCI FI Channel, where he directed spots for the series “Battlestar Galactica” and “Stargate

Cartoon Character Design

Assignment: Story Board/Animatic Student: Mark Jenkins Class: Principles of Screen Design-ANIM-270-03 Professor: Johannes Simon Conditions: 15fps Resolution: 701×480 Programs: Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premier The purpose of this assignment was to do an animatic of a story board (aka an animated story board). Out of 40 different scenarios, we had to choose 1, and story board it any form or fashion we wanted, just as long as it portrayed the scenario. The how and why of each scenario was up to us, as neither were necessary requirements for the assignment; we did have to have sound and music. We had no time limit or limitations in media. I chose to hand draw all the environments, character pose and everything, and scan them into photoshop. In Photoshop, I cleaned up the edges and touched up some details and organized all the different elements into groups and layers in order to be exported into After Effects. Once in After Effects, I animated everything, all the movements, camera panning, cuts, etc. I then exported the animated video file to Adobe Premier where I would add sound. And there you have it. I really-REALLY loved doing this assignment.
