Show Opening Graphics

Watching the Opening graphics of a TV show is like window shopping. It tells you in a very short amount of time what the show is about, what’s the tone of that show and if the graphics are done well, it’s what you will remember the most about a particular TV Show. When you watch the opening, you decide immediately if you want to watch that show or not without actually watching or ”trying on” the show. Designing the Opening Graphics wisely is extremely important for a TV show. Play below some of the show openings I have designed for MTV, Vh1, Nick & Cartoon Network and do some fun unusual window shopping! |

| Neo has been a very successful Show packaging for Vh1. Not only it has done great in bringing in viewers for this block of new music videos in Latin America, but it has become a classic open in the Vh1 creative circle because Vh1 India, Vh1 Asia, Vh1 Europe and Vh1 Eastern Europe have re-used this show opening design for different shows of their own where the concept of new …/new beginings has worked very well in their own markets. The name Neo stayed in all of the shows and they added a different tagline. The Neo logo won me a Gold Award for Best Logo Design at the BDA (Broadcast Design Association) Promax awards. | ||

| Vh1 Classic Videos Show Open is one of my favorites. I did it for the first block of classic music videos when we launched Vh1 Latin America. Everyone loved it, it became a classic in the office: you’ll walk through the hallways at lunchtime and all the TVs where set to Vh1 Clasico. Very cool! The concept of this Show Open it’s very ”classic”: it’s a trip of a groove going through a vinyl record visiting classic genres. I dreamed the groove moving through the vinyl and that resonated very well in everyone’s mind. This look became so loved that for a year all the other representative image pieces of Vh1 (logo animations, menus, etc) had the same look with the vinyl record. | ||

| Vh1 Videografia is a great show about the music video history of a particular band or musician. We did a play on the word video and history and come up with the picture biography of a ”video” literally. Very fun! | ||

| For many years, the software Flash, used to be an extension of my brain. I used to do a lot of designs and animations using it, so when MTV started with the show FLASH MTV they called me to do the opening graphics. Flash MTV is an interactive show where viewers send in their flash animations and they get shown during the show. It’s a pretty complex concept to feature in 20 seconds of show opening graphics. So I thought about it for a few days and I realized that the best way to show that complex concept was to make a visual analogy: Flash MTV is like if you throw a boomerang -you send in your flash animation- and it comes back to you but now it’s thousands of boomerangs coming back -your animation comes backs to you, but not only you, now it also appears in thousands of homes-. This one was a challenge! | ||

Cartoon Network’s world soccer championship “Copatoon”. If you don’t know how big soccer is in Latin America, you are missing out a great treat of the latin culture: during soccer championships 98% of the population stops working to watch soccer (2%: emergency room doctors and maybe the President keeps working), classes at high shools and college stop to watch the soccer game, TV sets appear in every corner, store, subway station, pretty much anywhere there is power and cable you will find a crowd of people watching the game. The city is in pause while a soccer game is in progress. It’s really funny when your team hits a point, everyone everywhere screams Goooaaaalll and celebrates. Very amusing. So Cartoon Network Latin America created the franchise Copatoon, that’s world soccer championship of the toons. The soccer games are really funny, and when the franchise started, I did the opening for the first show with Space Ghost. I love Space Ghost. He was the begining of toons coming to ”life” and doing ”other things” after ”work”. (In the web section there are other spots I did for online only of soccer games for Copatoon). |

“Meus Premios” was the first Kids Choice Awards show ever for Brazil. It was the first time Nick Latin America created an event like that for kids. The first time for Nick or any other channel for kids. The show was a huge success and since then every year the event bring more and more revenues, more sponsors, big starts that want to participate and more happy kids that continue to watch Nick. This opening has the colorful nature of the Brazilian culture, the music has it’s rhythm and the animation has it’s energy. The characters of the pack go in the traditional orange blimp from the American franchise to a really fun amusement park, where the 1st event actually happened. Enjoy! |

| When I got the call to do this Thanksgiving Avatar Weekend Show graphics for Nicktoons Network they told me: we know is Thanksgiving, but don’t do anything thanksgiving like! Do not put turkeys in the design! Maybe use the ‘thanksgiving’ color in the logo and maybe a thanksgiving detail in the logo! We want action and show off the Avatar elements (fire, water, etc.). I thought: Good! definitely the last air bender and turkey in the same picture don’t match. These graphics did so well that now Nicktoons is using them for other events with Avatar without the Thanksgiving logo. What these graphics created was a franchise, so now, when the audience see these graphics, they know that there is an Avatar event to watch in Nicktoons Network. Very efficient. | ||
